4 Tips For Creative Writing

(Provided by CalPac, Tuesday, November 22, 2016)

Creative writing is one of those things that it seems that it might only be enjoyable for those people who like to write or read stories or poems.  However, here at CALPAC we know that there is so much more to creative writing.

So how do you become a successful creative writer?

Here are some tips to help you on your writing journey...

Journal

Keep a journal by you at all time so that whenever you have an idea you can quickly jot it down. We can get inspired any place any time. Usually people are inspired during the times they are not sitting behind their computer waiting for the content to come to them. So be prepared and it will pay off.

Quick tip: Often the people and activities around you will give you inspiration for characters or themes in your writing so be observant.

Be Aware

Some of us are morning people and others come alive at night. Take some time to think about when you are the most productive during your day and have the most energy. Try to block out some time around those times so that you can be productive when writing.

Quick tip: Stop procrastinating! That TV show isn't going to give you any inspiration and creativity cannot be rushed.

Find Inspiration
Start reading different creative authors to get diversified and exposed to different ways of creative writing. It can also be helpful to focus your research in the area you want to focus on. For example, if you are interested in blogs start following different bloggers.

Quick tip: Blogging is a great way for new writers to share their creative writing so don't be afraid to start your own. You can keep it anonymous or share it with your family and friends.

You Can't Fail
Perfectionism will cloud your creativity and ultimately kill it. Don't over think it. Creativity is a process so take failure out of the equation. Your work is going to look completely different than any other work that has been done so there is no need to compare yourself. Don't criticize your work, just know it is still a work in progress and take in good feedback.

Creative writing is artistic in nature.  This can be writing that is short stories or poems, like most people think, or it can be writing for newspapers, magazines or even plays or screenplays.  Any of those types of writing can be very creative.

We encourage anyone who is interested in learning to write well, loves to read or already loves to write to come to our meetings and learn more about the craft of writing.  Since all of our learning is distance learning it is important to reach out and connect with other students in lots of different ways and create learning communities that have things in common.
