Alternative to the Traditional Setting: Going Virtual as a Special Education Student

(Provided by CalPac, Friday, September 21, 2012)

The world of Special Education is changing, rapidly. Students with Individualized Education Plans and 504s are shifting their placements from the regular classroom setting to an online environment.  Wondering why? The flexibility of distance learning has become one of the key attributes that has attracted this population of students away from being on a school campus. Teachers are able to individualize their teaching strategies to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities. The amount of attention and assistance that is available in the virtual world is incredible.

California Pacific Charter Schools’ virtual school program prides itself on providing a stimulating academic curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging. Teachers have high expectations for all students including those with IEPs and 504s. All students enrolled in the online courses are taught in the virtual general education classroom meeting grade level standards. Furthermore, CalPac utilizes the skills of a Program Specialist to meet with students who qualify for services to tailor their learning experiences to their learning style on a weekly basis. The continuous monitoring, encouragement, and assistance has fostered a successful virtual school setting for students who have special needs.

Overall, online education has become an alternative to the traditional school setting. The population of students who desire something different, more flexible, and conducive to their learning needs is growing. Shifting away from being on a campus to learning from home on a computer is becoming much more popular. Soon, the Internet will be the “go to” hot spot for learning for all grade levels, not just colleges or universities.
