Don’t kid yourself, time management is a common problem for online students. In today’s world there are plenty of distractions that can pull you away. The mix of outside activities, clubs, jobs and family adds to the difficulty of getting your homework done. With online schools becoming more popular for middle and high school students, planning your time can lead the way to a successful online academic experience. Below are just a few tips to help, just remember stay focused and committed to what you try.
Set aside a specific time for schoolwork. This way you know you are accountable to be doing schoolwork, and are much more likely to be doing it. Just like an appointment share your schedule with someone, that way you can be reminded if you forget and parents know this is your time. When you create a habit of doing schoolwork at a certain point, it gets easier to do. If you ever get done early with your assignments for the day, it becomes your time to choose what you want to do, woohoo.
A common way that time is hijacked from you is social networking and tv noise. Jumping around Facebook or going over to play a video game might sound like a small break, but it can easily turn into much more. Discipline yourself to stay focused on schoolwork; you’ll be surprised how much you can get done. Join an online club at school, it’s just one way to get to know others and break up the day.
Lastly, don’t lose time when you need help. Your instructors are there for you. If it’s something specific communicate it through the email, or arrange a time during office hours. Often, in many courses concepts build on earlier material. Make sure you understand what’s happening before you move ahead, chances are it may save some time in the long run.
