CAHSEE Suspended As Of October 7th, 2015

(Provided by CalPac, Monday, November 09, 2015)

A big change has been announced for the students of our Online High School; as of October 7th, 2015, Senate Bill (SB) 172 (Liu) was signed by Governor Brown suspending the administration of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) through the 2017-2018 school year.

Since 2003, in order to receive a High School Diploma, students have had to earn a minimum score on both the English and Math sections of the CAHSEE in addition to meeting all applicable graduation requirements.  With the signing of this new Bill, several changes will take effect:

   1)    The requirement that students completing grade twelve successfully pass the CAHSEE  as a condition of receiving a diploma of graduation will be suspended for the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years.

   2)    Local educational agencies are required to grant a diploma to any student who completed grade twelve in any school year subsequent to 2003-04 and has met all applicable graduation requirements other than passing the CAHSEE.

   3)    “The State Superintendent of Public Instruction must convene an advisory panel to provide recommendations on the continuation of the high school exit exam and on alternative pathways to satisfy the high school graduation requirements.”

Based on this decision, California Pacific Charter School will not be administering the CAHSEE exam to any students for the next three school years.  Students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 will, however, still be expected to attend and participate in CAASPP testing (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) which includes Smarter Balanced Computer Based testing and/or the paper and pencil California Standards Test in Science in the Spring.

Additionally, beginning on January 1st, 2016, California Pacific Charter School will be looking into all previous students who met grad requirements (with the exception of the CAHSEE) and will be issuing High School Diplomas to all applicable students.
