California High School Exit Exam for Mathematics

(Provided by CalPac, Friday, June 01, 2012)

Why must high school online students take this exam?

Students at California Pacific Charter Schools still must take and pass the high school exit exam in order to obtain their high school diploma.  It is not the only requirement students must meet but it is still a requirement in our state and one here at our online school.

This exam is designed to determine if students are proficient at the level of mathematics necessary in order to graduate and be more successful immediately after high school.

What is the exam all about?

The mathematics portion of the high school exit exam is meant to test mathematical knowledge from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade level.

The math portion of the exam covers the following strands:

  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Number Sense
  • Algebra & Functions
  • Measurement & Geometry
  • Algebra I

A student needs to obtain a scaled score of 350 on the mathematics portion.  This means a student must answer correctly a little over half of all items on the exam.

It is imperative that students use the resources that the California Department of Education provides on their site.  It provides the best information pertaining to what the exam looks like and what is required.  Exam blueprints, released test questions, study guides, can be found on the CDE site here http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/resources.asp.

What is offered at California Pacific Charter Schools to help me do well on the exam?

We offer a CAHSEE preparation course for our students.  It contains all major strands of the exam.

The course is set up much like the standard math courses here at CalPac.  There are lectures, vocabulary work, additional online resources, and interactive labs.  A credentialed math teacher is available for help through live sessions, one on one help sessions, IM, email and phone.   The teacher can also provide extra practice sites and resources not found in the lessons.

We have several students, including high school seniors, who still must pass the exam and need more support.  They are enrolled in this course in order to ensure they prepared and can graduate on time.
