California On-line School Help Math Students Know Multiplication Facts
(Provided by CalPac, Monday, June 04, 2012)
Many times Pre-Algebra and Algebra students are stumped by fractions simply because they do not know the multiplication facts. The on-line student should set aside some time to memorize those facts, and the calculations required in Pre-Algebra and Algebra will come much easier.
On-line Students can practice at these free drill type interactive on-line sites as part of their school work:
Math Magician
Multiflyer
Dad's Multiplication
Here are some activities that make multiplication practice fun:
• Roll two dice and multiply. Play with a friend and biggest answer wins point.
• Place flash cards all over house WITH answers showing. Sometimes just the seeing the visual over and over again in the bathroom, on the fridge, on the bedroom ceiling etc. will make it stick.
• Place the flash cards with answer showing on the ceiling of students bedroom. Give them a flash light and every night they have to flash the light on 10 cards and repeat the fact 5 times each.
• Draw two playing cards (with face cards removed) and multiply. The highest answer wins.
• Use small white board and markers to write facts. Or use windows or any glass with expo markers. Sometimes just being able to write on a window is fun and will make it stick.
• Movement helps. Especially moving in a figure eight. Have student walk a figure eight path while skip counting. Getting both sides of the brain involved sometimes makes a huge impact.
• Use sidewalk chalk to write variety of numbers. Then call out the fact and have student run to the answer.
• Write facts in different colors and the visual learners will remember... it was the "blue" one.
• Make up silly rhymes to remember: 6 asked 8 on a date 6 x 8 is 48
• Write out 2,4,6,8, etc. each on a separate index card. Shuffle cards and have the student put in order as fast as they can. Set a time and try to beat your best time.
• Use magnet numbers on the fridge. Mess them all up and each morning or anytime student wants to get something out of the fridge they must put them in order 2,4,6,8 etc. before the fridge is allowed to be opened.
On-line students of any age will get rusty on the multiplication facts, so a bit of review and practice is good for everyone. You can have fun and do school work!
