Building an online community for struggling learners
California public school students have a lot on their plate. Growing class sizes and dwindling budgets have left a lot of struggling learners behind as many school districts are forced to downsize or, worse yet, close down their adult education and credit recovery programs. As an online public charter school, CalPac is able to provide a tuition-free virtual credit recovery program for students who are credit deficient and seeking ways to graduate on time. At California Pacific Charter Schools, we encourage not only academic achievement but community. As a counselor, I firmly believe that a strong, supportive learning community will do wonders to bolster a student’s success. Because our students are spread out all over the state of California in cities spanning from San Diego, to Los Angeles, to Central and Northern California, the need to create a close learning community is even more pressing and we are doing something about it.
In order to support our online credit recovery students, the counseling team has developed monthly meetings where students meet in a virtual classroom to learn about success tips, goal setting, and various other topics that will support them as they work on building a pathway to graduation. So often, students in online schools who struggle academically don’t have a venue to ask questions, commiserate with peers, and meet with a mentor who will help guide them towards success. With our monthly Credit Recovery Live Sessions, the counseling team is hoping to build a community for these students— comprised of a network of learners just like them and fostered by a strong counseling team. It is our hope and our plan that, with the consistency of regular meetings and the support of not only their counselors and teachers but their peers, the CalPac Credit Recovery students will have a foundation from which to thrive and succeed during a time when so many educational doors are being closed to them.
