Charter School Benefits & Back To The Future

Everyone has been talking about Back to the Future 2 and how Michael J. Fox portrayed the future to be in 2015.  I came across something he said which I believe depicts the benefits of homeschooling perfectly.

Michael J. Fox said,“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” Excellent idea Michael! I wish everyone followed this wise advice! Parents and Educational Specialists from CalPac Online wholeheartedly agree and make it their mission to find the way the kids learn best and put it into action.

Independent learning is a wonderful way to make learning fun and meaningful.  Students enjoy the chance to create their own meaning and answer their own questions rather than sit through lessons in a classroom that do not interest them.  In homeschooling, the world is our classroom and the boundaries are what you make them.

A student does not grow when you place limits on what he or she can learn.  The best way to grow your child is to let them pursue the areas that they are most interested in learning.  The support for self initiated learning or independent study is when the kids take ownership of their education.  When a student is guided by the parents to establish independent learning they begin to realize that learning is something you can do for yourself and others.

One of my favorite parts of being an Educational Specialist is meeting with my families.  I witness firsthand the power that the kids have in determining their education.  CalPac allows the students to choose how and what they earn.  The parents are there to support them and help find the materials for each learning period, but the students are the ones that are active in the planning of what to study. Recently a parent shared that when her daughter use to come home from school and was asked what did you learn, she would respond with “Nothing”.

Now her mom shares that her daughter can’t stop talking about what they looked at during the day with her father over dinner.  She is so motivated to talk about the books and ideas she came across while learning that day.  Her daughter does not feel confined to learn about things she already knows or doesn’t want to explore.

Instead she is able to plan her own curriculum around the areas she loves such as art, science, and literature. Hearing parents share stories like this makes my heart sing! I am so happy that CalPac and online school can change a student’s negative view of school into a wonderful adventure she can’t wait to embark.

Homeschooling allows parents to create authentic learning experiences through everyday activities.  A trip to the grocery store can turn into a language arts, math, and science lesson.  We often miss many opportunities to further our kids’ education because we are looking for big moments.  Asking your kids what they are interested in learning more about can help plan for a great week of lessons. Parents who choose to homeschool give their kids the gift of choice and the power to reach their potential.
