Creating a Final Exam Study Group for Online Middle and High School Students
(Provided by CalPac, Thursday, January 17, 2013)
Preparing for online final exams can seem a daunting and lonely task. Unlike in a brick and mortar school, where students review for a final exam directly with the teacher and other students, online school students mostly prepare on their own by studying a large array of notes and readings. However, California Pacific Charter School students have many tools available to them to help create a final exam study group and not have to go at it alone! Tools such as Blackboard IM, e-mail, and Blackboard Collaborate (with the assistance of a teacher) can all be utilized to create an effective study group where students can either divide up the review work and then share with each other or just review specific topics in a group and ask each other questions!
Below are some tips for creating an effective online study group:
1) Seek out students to be in your group. This can be done with the assistance of a specific teacher or via Blackboard IM. Most CALPAC students know the names of at a least few other students in each of their classes and can reach out to them on IM to try and coordinate. Another option is for students to contact their teacher and have their teacher assist them with finding students for their study group.
2) Plan a time and place for your initial meeting. If your meeting is to be in Blackboard Collaborate then you will need to pre-arrange a time when a teacher can supervise the group in his/her classroom. If the meeting is to be over Blackboard IM then students can use the Group Chat or Collaborate features in the IM system. However you meet, it is important to set guidelines during your first meeting, including if you want to divide up the review work and then share with each other or if you want to keep it more open and discuss general review topics as group each time you meet.
3) Set-up a schedule for continued meetings leading up to your exam. Making a schedule is important so that all online study group members can plan accordingly and also be held accountable for doing their fair share.
As you can see, online high school and middle school students do not have to go about reviewing alone! Create an online study group and review amongst friends!
