Dia de los Meurtos Virtual Field Trip - Recap

(Provided by CalPac, Wednesday, November 02, 2016)

For many people, November 1st and 2nd are days of celebration, near and dear to their hearts. Though typically misunderstood and misrepresented as a Halloween-esque holiday, the Day of the Dead – or Dia de los Muertos – is a symbolic day to honor the deceased.

Today, Ms. Canosa took CalPac students on a virtual field trip to Mexico to learn more about the Day of the Dead.

A few keys take-aways from our Variety Hour celebration...

- The Day of the Dead dates back to before Columbus. The Aztecs used this two-day celebration to honor loved ones who had passed. November 1st was the day to remember children and November 2nd was the day to remember adults.

- It's a time of happiness! It's easy to feel sadness when thinking of loved ones who are no longer with us, but this holiday is about celebrating and remembering their lives and the impact they had on us.

- There are many traditional ways to celebrate this holiday, including: setting up altars using the loved ones' favorite things, leaving flowers – specifically marigolds – on the altar or at the grave site, enjoying "calacas" (sugar skulls), baking pan de muertos, burning, incense, and dressing up as/decorating with skeletons.

- Each family celebrates their own way, with their own traditions. As with most holidays, it's not one-size-fits-all. Families truly cater the holiday to their own traditions and celebrate accordingly.

Muchas gracias to Ms. Canosa for this excellent virtual field trip!

And if you missed it, be sure to ask her for a picture of her incredible face paint.
