Exploring Los Angeles in the Summer Time – A Guide for Online High School Students

School’s out for summer!  After spending an entire school year getting friendly with your computer screen and instant messenger chatting with your online school teachers, now is the time to spread your wings, leave the confines of your home, and experience the outdoors!

Below are some favorite Los Angeles summertime activities!  I hope you consider trying our one or two of these suggestions this summer before school starts in the Fall and you are back to daily computer bonding time!

Santa Monica Pier/Promenade/Beach!  Santa Monica is one of my favorite places to spend time outdoors in the summer!  The pier offers an amusement park with rides for all ages, a carousel, an arcade, and tons of places to eat.

The beaches in Santa Monica are spectacular and great for lounging on the sand or playing in the water.  The Santa Monica mall and promenade are both outdoor venues and have tons of shopping, restaurants, street performers, and movie theaters.  And all of these places are right next to each other, which means you can visit all of them in one day!

Will Roger’s State Park!  This is one of my favorite places to go hiking or just have a picnic.  There are tons of great hiking trails leading to scenic views of the coastline.  There is also a sprawling lawn great for running around, playing games, or picnicking!  You can even watch a game of Polo (like field hockey but on horses) if you go at the right time!

Big Bear Lake!  I know this isn’t technically Los Angeles, but it is so close and such a great place to go in the summer!  They have great camping, an awesome little zoo (you wouldn’t think it, but it’s pretty cool), water and alpine slides, tons of great hiking, and the best part of it all – THE LAKE! J  In just two hours you can be there and it is well worth the drive!

The Getty Museum!  One of my favorite places to go!  Not only is there amazing art to see, but the outdoor grounds and the buildings themselves are magnificent!  The garden is huge and amazing – you could spend your whole day just in the garden alone!

Summer Outdoor Concerts and Movie Nights!  There are a bunch of these types of events all over Los Angeles in the summer.  These are free concerts and you get to listen to wonderful music while enjoying the beautiful outdoors!  Here is a link which lists them all: http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/blog/100-free-things-do-los-angeles-free-summer-concerts.
