How to Obtain a Work Permit While In High School

Each year, millions of minors are employed to work in the United States. When you are in the middle of a project of studying for finals week, it is hard to imagine doing anything else but being a full time student.

The fact of the matter is many of our students work in addition to attending school online at CALPAC. Some students work out of necessity, others work to make a little extra spending money, whatever the reason may be, your counselor can work with you to obtain a work permit.

Let’s take a look at the steps required for obtaining a work permit at CALPAC:

Step 1:
Be on pace and passing all of your classes. This is crucial. At California Pacific Charter Schools, education comes first and your academic success is always our number one priority. If you are not passing all of your classes with an actual grade of 60% (D) or higher, you will not be eligible for a work permit.

Step 2:
Attend school regularly; this is simple enough—log into your student account on a daily basis during the school week and complete the work that is assigned to you. (Helpful Tip: Check out your Assignment Calendar in your Organizer to find out what is being assigned each day!) If you are not attending school each school day and completing work in your classes, you will not be eligible for a work permit.

Step 3:
Get a job offer. Here is an interesting fact that many students do not know: work permits are job site specific! This means that you get a work permit to work at a specific establishment. Work permits are not like drivers licenses—you can’t just have one and be able to work anywhere!

Step 4:
Request a request form from your Counselor—you read that right! You and your employer (the company hiring you) must first fill out a Request for aWork Permit form. Your counselor will provide you a copy of this form that you can print out and take to your employer. Once it’s all filled out, you move on to step 5!

Step 5:
Submit completed Request for a Permit Form to your counselor. She will review your attendance and grades, and if you meet the requirements in Steps 1 and 2, you will be issued a work permit within 1-2 days. (Work permits are renewed each semester. We will review your progress from the semester before at the time of your renewal, and if you did not pass all of your classes, we might not renew your permit or you might be placed on a probationary permit.)

There you have it! It’s simple enough but, as you can see, school comes first here at CALPAC. We value your education, and we encourage you to  do so as well by doing your best. If you are able to do this, then we are happy to support you in your endeavors to find a job! Happy job hunting.
