Knock Your Note-Taking Out of the Park

Taking good notes is critical to your academic success for many reasons. First, they improve your concentration. Needing to listen to a lecture or read a text, process the information, and identify key points will help you commit the information to memory. Additionally, taking notes, especially of lectures or presentations, will give you a written record of what you’re learning. Finally, grab a notebook and pen and take notes the old fashioned way.

According to findings published in Psychological Science, “taking notes by hand is better than taking notes on a laptop for remembering conceptual information over the long term.”

Want to improve your note-taking? Try some of these tips and tricks – you just might see a difference!

Start a fresh page for each new lecture and be sure to date and/or number the page. Keeping your notes organized and orderly will help you be able to easily reference information.
Don’t write down every word you hear. Listen for keywords, points, dates, etc. Trying to write down everything that comes out of your teachers’ mouth will leave you frantic and frustrated.
If you’re unclear about something you hear or if you miss a point, don’t worry. Leave a blank space and keep taking notes. Ask your teacher for clarification later.
