Learning New Concepts - Accelerating Your Potential
(Provided by CalPac, Thursday, October 06, 2016)
One part of learning to study and do well in online courses, and especially in harder courses like math, is to learn to review one’s notes and important concepts. The first step is to take great notes. After taking notes on the instruction and vocabulary, one can begin the process of reviewing the information and material.
When a student reviews his/her notes it helps with the retention, the ability to remember the ideas or concepts for a specific length of time. The more a student reviews the notes and the frequency in which the notes are reviewed also contributes to the retention of the material and concepts.
Reviewing notes is not something that is to be done once and only right before a test. Reviewing is to be a regular part of the study process for a student. A student should review his/her notes, ideally, within 20 minutes after taking the notes. Remembering the information so soon after taking notes will help to solidify the information in the brain for easier recollection later.
The second time for reviewing should be within the next 24 hours or first day after taking notes. Again, by doing this, you are creating more memories and giving yourself an easier way to recall the information and concepts learned.
Then review again, a third time, later that week. Every time you review, you are giving yourself the opportunity to do better by having a faster recall of the material.
Often times just reading or re-reading over one’s notes can seem a bit redundant. Spice up your reviewing by doing a few different activities. Rewriting the notes using colorful pens or pencils may help you to retain the information. Outlining the main points can help with this as well. Some concepts lend themselves to walking or moving while reviewing.
Marching around the room while memorizing multiplication tables or angles for geometry may help one’s retention because the student is using more senses while reviewing. Occasionally, getting your senses involved while reviewing or memorizing your notes adds to the fun and creativeness of learning.
As a student reviews often, the material from the lesson, unit, or instruction is easier to recall and is readily available for the student to access for homework, practice, and ultimately quizzes and tests. Creatively reviewing notes as well as frequently reviewing notes will encourage the students greater success in any and all courses, especially the more challenging ones.
