Make the Most Out of Your Middle School or High School Experience
(Provided by CalPac, Wednesday, December 21, 2016)
It can be challenging to feel like you are part of an online community, especially if you feel like you're just another name in the chat box during a live session. We want all our students (and parents) at CalPac to feel known and a part of our extended educational family. Here are a few ways you can make the most of your time with CalPac...
Get Involved:
CalPac has clubs and opportunities to get involved in other extra curricular activities. Clubs not only allow you to engage in activities that you're already passionate about, they also help develop and refine leadership skills while getting to know your classmates and teachers!
Take advantage of tutoring:
Without the face-to-face interaction among classmates and teachers, it can be extra challenging to persevere through a confusing unit or difficult course on your own. Let your teachers help you by attending tutoring sessions. Sometimes all it takes is a focused session to clarify misunderstandings and you can be on your way. Other times, it might take a few days/weeks to totally grasp a concept – and that's okay! Your teacher wants you to succeed and are willing to do what it takes to get you there!
Go the extra mile with AVID:
Want a leg up as you're considering options for post-graduation studies or careers? Consider enrollment in AVID classes. AVID classes are designed to build up organizational skills, study skills and critical thinking to make students college and career ready.
Work with your School Counselors:
According to Catherine Gewertz of Education Week and a recently published study, "Meeting one-on-one with a school counselor to discuss college admission or financial aid makes a big difference in students' futures:
- tripling the chance they'll attend college
- doubling the chance that they'll attend a four-year college
- increasing by nearly seven times the likelihood that they'll apply for financial aid
School counselors provide information and encouragement for students and parents alike. Take advantage of your accessibility to some of the bestcounselors and academic advisors students around!
