Preparing for Finals

(Provided by CalPac, Wednesday, January 30, 2013)

It’s drawing near the end of the semester at CalPac Online  and with that means finals.  Although taking finals can be extremely stressful there are some ways to prepare that can eliminate some of the pressure.

According to the article “9 Ways to Prepare for Finals” on Fastweb.com there are some simple steps to take.  Here’s a few of the important ones.

Start Early

One of the best preparations is to get an early start on studying.  This means don’t wait until the last minute or the night before.  Get a head start by studying at least a week before finals.

Study Your Notes

A great way to prepare is to go over your notes.  If you took notes online you can always print them out.  Reviewing or making outlines can help you remember information.

Make Flashcards

One of the best ways to study is with flashcards.  Take a list of key vocabulary or terms from your online class and list the vocabulary word on one side with the definition on the other.  You may even want to take this a step further and actually draw a visual on the definition side.  This would be especially helpful when studying for Art courses. See the example below:

Sleep

Nothing can be more important than getting a good night rest prior to your finals.  Sleep will make you more alert and more able to readily recall information for your exams.

Stay Calm

It’s very important to take a few deep belly breathes prior to taking a final or if you find yourself getting anxious during an exam.  Take a moment.  Close your eyes.  Breathe deep into your belly through your mouth and then exhale fully through your mouth.  Remember to pay attention to your breathe.  Try at least 3 of these breathes.  You should find yourself much calmer and ready to continue.

Ask for Help

If you find you are still in need of help you can always contact your teacher for additional recommendations.  Depending on the subject you are studying for other techniques may be helpful.

Good luck!
