PSAT Options for Online High School Students
(Provided by CalPac, Monday, September 24, 2012)
Just because you attend high school online, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all of the things high school has to offer. Many local high schools offer the PSAT, and CALPAC can help you find a school that will allow you to test in an area near you. Whether you live in northern California or southern California, you can find a local school near you to take school administered tests such as the PSAT or AP exams. (Not to be confused with the SAT, which are administered through the College Board).
The next PSAT examination date is October 17th, 2012 or October 20th, 2012.
Have you heard of the PSAT? The PSAT is an exam that prepares students for college entrance exams such as the SAT or the ACT. The multiple-choice test is divided into three main sections: critical reading, writing, and math. Students are required to comprehend short reading passages, identify and correct grammatical errors, describe graphs, and solve problems in elementary math, algebra, and geometry. There are 125 questions and the test is scored similarly to the SAT. Students are penalized for wrong answers (you lose ¼ of a point for every wrong answer), so in some cases it’s better to leave a question blank than to guess.
The PSAT also qualifies students in the 11th grade to be a national merit scholar. Students who score in the 99th percentile of all juniors who take the test are national merit semifinalists and can qualify to compete for the prestigious award. Finalists become eligible for scholarship money provided by the National Merit Scholarship Committee and other private enterprises.
CALPAC is not able to offer the PSAT since our students are scattered all over the state of California. We recommend that online high school students who want to take this exam contact their local school ASAP to see if they can take the exam with the local students. The school may charge a nominal fee that could range between $10 - $50. CALPAC will not reimburse a student for this expense.
