Real Time in the Online World

(Provided by CalPac, Friday, October 05, 2012)

Given that I work for Cal Pac Schools as an online teacher, I’m online basically all day.  Some of the most useful tools I use frequently are real time websites.

Mega Doppler

If you live in the Los Angeles, Orange County, Inland Empire or Ventura County regions, I love the weather mega doppler from ABC news at this site: http://abc7.com/weather/doppler/.

Here you can view real time weather including severe weather warnings in your area.  In fact, if there is a thunderstorm, you can see where lighting is striking and where it struck 5 minutes and 30 minutes ago.

Google Earth:

You will need to install the plug in software, but once you do…you get to explore geographic data on a 3D globe!  Here is the site:

http://www.google.com/intl/en/earth/explore/products/plugin.html

You can see satellite views of your house, street, landmarks and even the moon.  If you find a particularly cool picture, you can even send a screenshot to your family and friends.  I can virtually get lost for hours on this website exploring the earth!

SigAlert:

Now if you live in Southern California, this is a MUST to navigate the freeways:

http://www.sigalert.com/Map.asp?region=Greater+Los+Angeles#lat=33.98417&lon=-118.22335&z=2

Here, you can see real time traffic and create routes to your destination. I rarely leave the house without checking this site first when I have to hit the freeways.  In addition to real time traffic, if you click on the camera icons along the route, you can see the Caltrans camera shot of the road.  How cool is that?

I embrace technology and love that it has enhanced and enriched the quality of my life.   I hope you, too will check out these sites and give them a spin!
