So Much To Do, So Little Time – You’re Almost There

(Provided by CalPac, Monday, May 11, 2015)

Each year I secretly hope this to be the best school year ever.  What does that mean to me? That means that I am totally organized to the point where I have free time to do the other things that I want to do that are FUN!

I have read that successful people have a plan. Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” I am taking Mr. Franklin seriously and preparing.

First, I look at my assignment calendar. I determine the number of lessons that need to be completed each week in each class. You can do this by looking at one course at a time. CALPAC is an online school that has a great assignment calendar for each course.

Look at the first course, English Language Arts, and the third week of school and the fourth week of school. It appears that I have 3 to 4 lessons to complete in that class per week. I do this with my other five classes. The approximate number of lessons that I need to complete a week is 16 lessons.

Second, I determine how much time it takes me to complete one lesson in each of my six classes:  English Language arts, 45 minutes; Math, 1 hour; PE lesson, 45 minutes; Science, 45 minutes; Social Studies/ History, 1 hour; Strategies for Academic Success, 45 minutes.

My chart looks like this. See pictures below.

This is the chart of my lessons per week and the time I will spend on each lesson.

Next, I will place the course name and the number of lessons to complete in the days that I will be working on each class. This is based on how many lessons I need to complete each week and how long it takes me to complete them. So for example, English Language Arts has 4 to 5 lessons each week and it takes me about 45 minutes to complete each lesson.  I am going to choose two days a week to do English Language Arts on for a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes each day.

Chart with English Lessons
I added the two lessons that will be done in English Language Arts on Monday and Wednesday.

On Another chart, I add the time.

I will add the lesson and the time to both charts for each of my classes.
Below are the completed charts.

One last step is to set the times each school day for me to complete my school work.

Yes another chart. It is a blank schedule of the days of the week with all the times written next to it from morning to evening. Now I can plan my schedule.

I plan on starting school at 9am. That gives me time to eat breakfast and wake up. I also need to input my live session schedule in here too so that I do not miss them or do school work during my live sessions.  So I will enter my live sessions first.

Now I will enter my lessons and the time that I need to take to do them.

I have entered English and Strategies. It is taking some time. But it will be well worth the effort and time put in.

Here is the completed chart.

I color coded the courses, used some abbreviations, and some specific wording so that I know what to do on what days at what times. English is a light red, almost pink color. The live session for English is on Wednesday from 2 to about 3pm. I have noted LS after English for Live Session. The word lesson after the course means that I am to work on a lesson in that course during that time. PE activity is the physical PE activity that I am doing like running, bike riding, or dancing. All of this organization helps me to get done what I need to get done so that I have time for the FUN things!
