Taking Learning on the Road- Traveling as an Online Learner

(Provided by CalPac, Thursday, May 24, 2012)

With the advent of modern wireless technology it’s now possible to take your education on the road with you, wherever you may be. As a teacher, I am able to travel and still provide online support to my students no matter the distance. Here are a few hints I have picked up in my travels.

First up, you will need to make sure you have what you need:

  • Laptop computer: this can be a standard notebook or netbook, as not all the software we use will work on all tablet devices (iPad, etc,)
  • Power supply: I carry a power inverter in my car to plug into on the road. Or just make sure your battery is well charged.
  • Wireless internet access: you can tether to a cell phone, use a wireless card or anywhere with reliable free wifi access (Starbucks, local libraries). For wifi access, do your research before you travel so you are aware of local availability.
  • Cell phone: just in case you need to contact your teacher with questions.
  • Someplace to set up to work: I fold down my front passenger seat and it provides a solid desktop area. Make sure you have room to write if you need to take notes.
  • Headphones/headset: so you can study and attend live sessions without distractions or disturbing your travelling companions.

Now that you have everything you need, you are ready to hit the road. When you travel, take the time to do a little research about your destination(s), maybe take a little walk around a local historic site (log the walk for PE credit and score points with your social studies teacher by talking about it). If your travels keep you cooped up in a hotel, check out the fitness center, most hotels have one, do something to get moving (don’t forget to log it for PE credit). Staying active is important if you are taking a long trip especially if by car or plane. Set aside some time each day to log into your courses, try to arrange excursions around your live session schedule, if possible, so you can share your experiences with your classmates.

Make the most of every destination, but don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers (and if you walk to the flowers, log it for PE credit)!! Or draw a picture of them for your art class. With an online education there is no distance between you and your education.
