This week, Ms. McClure will be taking students on a virtual trip around the world during Wednesday’s Variety Hour. Have you traveled to another state? Another country? If you could pick anywhere, where in the world would go?

There are many benefits to traveling. Whether its exploring a nearby town, a neighboring state, or flying across the pond, travel will most certainly help you grow and change in positive ways. It is an excellent educational tool and can be used to teach many important lessons.

Encourage independence and self-awareness. Living, working or interacting with people of different backgrounds will open your mind to other cultures, ways of doing things, and invaluable learning opportunities. Having enriching and challenging experiences with people you might not otherwise encounter, will provide an incredible opportunity for you to learn more about yourself.

Hone critical thinking and problem solving skills. Having to ask for directions from a person who speaks another language or figure out what different foods in a grocery store are can be tough. Being in an unfamiliar situation and having to get creative in finding solutions will help you to further develop and hone your critical thinking skills. Learning to think outside the box is a skill that will serve you long after you return home from your travels.

Demonstrate courage. We are often accustomed to our own way of doing things and feel comfortable in familiar situations. Stepping outside of your surroundings and having new experiences can be scary, but being uncomfortable or uncertain about trying something new isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The vulnerability of change creates room for growth which will move certainly help you navigate uncertain times in the future.
