The End of Summer Means Change is Upon Us
(Provided by CalPac, Friday, September 16, 2016)
The days are getting shorter. The temperature slightly cooler. And the new school year has begun. The transition from that summer mentality to a focused and organized one can be a challenge. At CalPac, we understand this time of transition and want to equip all our students – and their families – with tips to start the year off right.
Buy a planner:
Writing down assignments and keeping track of project deadlines the old-fashioned way – with a pen and paper will help you remember more effectively.
*Don't have the funds to purchase a planner? Make your own. Take a piece of notebook or computer paper and turn it into your own custom calendar. Add important dates and assignment reminders. Keep your planner or calendar in a place where you can see it.
Get to know your teachers:
Make sure you introduce yourself – albeit virtually – to your teachers and fellow classmates when possible. Share a fun fact about yourself – it will help them learn a little bit about you and will form a more personal connection.
Know when to take a break:
It can be challenging to sit at your computer or desk to get homework done, especially if you've already sat through Live sessions. If you're struggling to stay focused, set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes. Power through until the timer dings, then give yourself a 2 to 3-minute break to stand up and stretch, go to the restroom, or get a glass of water. The change of scenery will refresh you and your focus!
Discover your learning style:
Are you an auditory learner? Spend time talking things out. Reciting your notes aloud can help you retain information more effectively. Are you a visual learner? Use different colored pens/markers in your notes and draw pictures or diagrams that relate to what you're learning.
Get a good night of sleep:
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, getting more high-quality sleep is associated with better academic performance. It may be getting dark earlier in the evenings, but use that to your advantage. Being well rested will help you be more engaged in your learning and set you up for success in your classes.
