The Importance of Learning Logs – CALPAC
(Provided by CalPac, Sunday, October 14, 2012)
In an online, public, charter school, it is extremely important that Learning Logs are submitted to represent a student’s attendance in school. Instead of having to show up and be present in courses each day at a school site, a student just needs to record activities on a document and send it in to their homeroom teacher.
The state of California actually audits the school records to make sure real students are attending the virtual school daily and recording the work completed as proof. Even though the e2020 system records the work a student completes online, all of the studying, live session attendance, physical activities and tasks completed offline must be added to the log as proof of all of the hard work and time spent working towards academic success in the student’s courses. These activities may be the difference between missed days and perfect attendance.
Without Learning Logs, CALPAC would not be free of cost to our students because the state subsidizes the school per student based on student attendance. Can you imagine having to pay tuition to CALPAC each year just to attend school online and earn credits towards graduation?
Some helpful tips on organizing a student’s time to include completing the Learning Logs each week:
- Save the current Learning Log to your desktop for easy access each day.
- Schedule five minutes at the end of each day to record the online and offline activities worked on as well as any physical activities completed towards meeting the Physical Education requirement if necessary.
OR
- Record each activity right after you complete it. Either way, you will see a visual reward of the progress you are making in your courses and feel very productive and satisfied with your efforts to succeed.
- Send the completed log each week to your Homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers collect the logs, use them as reference in your conversations about your progress and submit them to the CALPAC Attendance Coordinator. The Attendance Coordinator will go through each log and record student attendance. These records are later reviewed by the California State Auditor for accuracy and proof of student attendance.
- Save all submitted logs in a file as your own record.
