The Power of School Counselors
(Provided by CalPac, Friday, February 10, 2017)
The case for increased investment in school counselors is a strong one. Recent statistical evidence is highlighting – more than ever before – the critical role school counselors play in helping more students finish high school and go on to college.
Many states, including Minnesota, Tennessee, and Colorado, are spending necessary dollars to bring more counselors, social workers, nurses, and school psychologists into their K-12 programs. Years ago, during the Great Recession, school support staffs took heavy hits in layoffs. Only now, nearly 10 years later, are schools committing to reestablishing this essential tool in their students’ educational journeys.
Richard Wong, the executive director of the American School Counselor Association, recently said, "People are realizing that a school counselor really is essential in a student's education,"
Acknowledging the growing social, emotional, and intellectual complexities of pre-teens and teens in school, Wong is "very happy to see states' response to the need."
So far, programs in the above mentioned states have seen vast improvements in many areas, from decreasing drop out rates and increased graduation numbers, to a better student-to-counselor ratio, and greater participation in Advanced Placement programs.
