Time to Get Involved, Write & Change the World
(Provided by CalPac, Friday, September 16, 2016)
Writing can be a great way to interact with the world. One of my mentors in college used to encourage me to write about what I experienced and knew since that was what I had the most knowledge of. This is especially true of students in online learning environments.
Writing can be an outlet for what they know and their experiences, but it can also be a good way for them to connect with other students and people their age. There are many ways that this can happen. There are numerous activities for writers to get involved with online.
First of all there are many different contests and sometimes scholarships that students can write for. A good place to find information on this is on the Scholastic website. You can visit teacher.scholastic.com to find more information on this.
There are also online magazines devoted to helping young writers and connecting with their peers. A good one is Teen Ink and it can be found at. This magazine and website offers many different things such as contests, blogs and even online writing courses for students who want to work on their craft and work with other students and peers that are like minded.
Students who love to write also can be encouraged to get involved in the community by writing letters for causes that they believe in. Here is a good resource to learn about writing letters for causes.
Remember, not only students who learn in a regular classroom can be involved in writing circles and communities. Many of these things can be created in the online learning environment using the available resources.
