Virtual Museums at Your Fingertips

Have you ever wondered what Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises looked liked? Or what brush stokes Leonardo da Vinci used in the Mona Lisa?  Or how about viewing recent acquisitions like the Getty’s new addition, Portrait of Madame Brunet?

Well, you don’t need to travel to New York City, Paris, or even nearby Los Angeles to find out.  With today’s modern technology, and online education, viewing famous artworks is only click away.


Virtual Museum Tours

Many famous museums are jumping on the band wagon and providing access to virtual museum tours. The MET (The Metropolitan Museum of Arts) is located in Manhattan, New York.  The MET houses some of the world most famous artworks to date.  But you don’t need to fly on a plane to view them.


You can take a journey virtually on your computer at The MET onlinewww.metmuseum.org.  At this site you can browse “New Installations”, Search through “Collections” or use the “Timeline of Art History.”  The MET online also provides resources for Kids, Teens, Adults, College Students, and Educators.


Your fingertips can access Paris and The Louvre online at  www.louvre.fr/en.  At The Louvre online you can virtually tour “Egyptian Antiquities”, browse “Selected Works” or learn about “The History of the Louvre” to name a few of the online features the museum provides.


At the Getty online, www.getty.edu you can not only view recent acquisitions and tour their online museum, you can also access “The Iris: Views from the Getty”http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/. “The Iris: Views from the Getty” is a fabulous blog site where you can view posts on all sorts of various art categories from Decorative Arts, Family fun to New Media and Sculpture.

Google Art Project

Perhaps one of the most innovative online virtual art tours is the Google Art Project. Google Art Project, www.googleartproject.com, not only works like a search engine, it provides many additional features as well.

You can tour museums from all over the world and view artworks up close where you can even zoom in to see the brush strokes and color in extraordinary detail.  Google Art Project is working on a feature that allows virtual tourists to create their own gallery featuring their favorite artworks.

So when you are taking a break from your online education, doing research for a paper, or feeling in need of some artistic knowledge or inspiration try touring virtual museums.  You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.
