What’s Great about Homeroom

(Provided by CalPac, Tuesday, September 18, 2012)

The virtual room for all your questions!

If you have been with CALPAC before you know that with online schooling can come a lot of questions. Sometimes we just don’t know who to ask with our problems or concerns. Introducing: your homeroom teacher! This is your go to person! If you have any question at all they can help. They will either answer it right there if it is a policy question or they will direct you to the appropriate source. If you have a specific course related question, like is there a difference between the question and hypothesis steps of scientific inquiry, you will still want to ask you specific course teacher. In this case, your science teacher would be the one who could lead you in the right direction here.  If you have a different type of issue, by all means ask your homeroom teacher first. They have been using this technology for awhile and they have some tricks up their sleeve. But if they can’t help, they will definitely guide you to tech support and be able to help you get the problem resolved.

So you are asking, what type of information will my homeroom teacher give me every week? Well I am glad you asked. Let’s go over that.

Online Learning Log

Each learning period your homeroom teacher will be sending you an email with a learning log attached. This is where you will record all of your school related activities for attendance. Think of it as your time card that you stamp every time you enter in your workplace. If you worked online you will “stamp” or record your activities. If you did offline work such as reading, working out for PE or essay planning this would go on your time card too. You will also put your live session attendance on your learning log. Basically the rule is, if you did anything for California Pacific Charter School then you will want to write it down.

School News/ Important Information

Any new information that affects the students will be communicated by your homeroom teacher. When we listened to your concerns about the IM system and converted back to blackboard, it was your homeroom teacher who delivered the good news. A good rule of thumb is to check your email periodically throughout the day. I would say you should check it at least 3 times each day, M-F, once when you first log on, once in the middle and once at the end of the day. This way you never miss out on important information from all of your teachers.

Communication Weekly

You homeroom teacher just may become your new best friend or at the very least your biggest cheerleader. You will be talking to them every week. If you are golden and on pace, they will simply be rooting for you on the sidelines telling you that you rock and to keep it up. If you are struggling with a subject or turning in work they will get in the game with you and help you plan your next move in order for you to be successful. Really that’s all any of your teachers want, is for you to find success and be able to graduate proud of yourself.

We know that school, whether it is distance learning from a computer or traditional brick and mortar, can be a struggle, especially if you feel like you are doing it alone. But have no fear; your homeroom teacher is here! The most important thing for you to do as a student is to reach out if you need them. They can’t always anticipate that you are struggling so simply shooting off an email and letting them know what is going on may be the difference between you achieving your goals or not.

Remember that you teachers have also written some great blogs about how to be successful online. You can find them at the link attached. Or if you are looking for a checklist of things you can do to be prepared for your virtual learning, the link here will send you to a great site for just that. Remember the goal of homeroom is for you to have a cheerleader in your corner helping you with anything you need this year. So let’s have a great year!
